Virginia child support is currently on par with neighboring states and on par with the national average. Raising child support, as proposed in SB1312, would make Virginia child support higher than any neighboring state, higher than the national average, and among the highest in the nation!!

This measure has already been "tabled for further study" by the House Courts of Justice committee, after being "passed by indefinitely" by the House Courts of Justice subcommittee. This bill is political pandering and should be defeated!
There is no compelling reason to raise Virginia child support. Virginia child support is already indexed for inflation by virtue of being a percentage of gross income.
There is no compelling evidence to support this raise in child support. In fact, over the years, child support has risen 4 times faster than the costs it is intended to cover, according to the sponsor's of the House bill. That is why there is a national outcry that child support amounts are too high, not too low!
Virginia child support is currently on par with neighboring states and on par with the national average (which is already too high). Raising child support, as proposed in SB1312, would make Virginia child support higher than any neighboring state, higher than the national average, and among the highest in the nation, especially at low to moderate income levels!!
